South African Bodyboarding Championships 2025 | Event Recap | Durban, South Africa

What an unforgettable week it’s been at the 2025 South African Bodyboarding Championships, held along the golden shores of Durban! Four incredible days of competition brought together riders from four provinces across the country — all showcasing the talent, passion, and spirit that make South African bodyboarding truly world-class.

Day 1 kicked off in style at North Beach, with powerful waves and high energy as the first heats hit the water. The country’s top riders wasted no time setting the tone, delivering big moves and tight battles that promised an epic week ahead at Far Bowl with fun, punchy bowls for everyone to express their skills.

Day 2 saw slightly smaller surf, but that didn’t slow things down — it was the perfect opportunity to get all the grommets in the water! The next generation of riders impressed everyone with their fearless approach and undeniable stoke, proving the future of SA bodyboarding is in good hands.

Day 3 moved to Brighton Beach, where clean 3–4 ft conditions and light offshore winds made for some of the best waves of the event. Despite a brief shark scare that paused the action for a short while, the safety team handled it flawlessly, and competition resumed with intensity and style. The level of riding stepped up another notch as finalists fought hard for their spots in the finals.

Day 4 — Finals Day — brought perfect conditions and an electric atmosphere to Brighton Beach. Every division delivered standout performances, with riders giving it their all in the water. From the juniors to the pros, it showcased pure dedication, talent, and heart.

The week concluded with a prize-giving ceremony at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban, where awards were presented across all divisions. Mark McCarthy claimed the Pro Division title, Sarah Houston won the Ladies Title, DK went to Nic Westman, and John Krige took the Juniors Title. In contrast, the Ethekwini Bodyboarding Association took home the Fishman Trophy, but Cape Town Bodyboarding was close behind in second place with their incredible team performance.

A massive shout out to all the competitors, judges, organizers, sponsors and fans who made this event possible. The 2025 SA Champs will be remembered for it’s stoke and the powerful sense of community that defines South African bodyboarding.
