There has been one question echoing through Durban’s surf community over the past few years:
“Does winter still arrive in Durban?”
If the 2026 season has proved anything, it’s that the answer is a resounding yes.
From the first solid pulses in early June through to the consistent runs of swell in July and into August, Durban has enjoyed one of its most memorable winter seasons in recent years. Offshore mornings, clean conditions and quality sandbanks have transformed the city’s beaches into a playground for surfers and bodyboarders alike.
Whether you were pulling into barrels at Cave Rock, threading runners at New Pier, linking sections at North Beach or enjoying playful walls at Bay of Plenty, there has been no shortage of quality sessions.
A Winter That Just Kept Delivering
Unlike many seasons that produce only a handful of standout days, this winter has been defined by consistency.
Week after week, the charts continued to light up, bringing regular swell to the Durban coastline. Local riders didn’t have to wait long between sessions, with many beaches producing fun, rideable waves multiple times each week.
It wasn’t just one break either.
New Pier enjoyed several extended runs of clean surf, North Beach offered long, playful peaks, Bay of Plenty came alive during the better swell windows, and Cave Rock once again reminded everyone why it remains one of South Africa’s premier bodyboarding waves.
Cave Rock Invitational 2026
The highlight of the season came in July when the Cave Rock Invitational returned under near-perfect conditions.
With consistent 4–6ft surf, offshore winds and a world-class lineup of invited riders, the event showcased everything that makes Durban bodyboarding special.
The standard of riding was exceptional, with heavy barrels, committed manoeuvres and high-performance surfing on display throughout the day. More importantly, it brought the South African bodyboarding community together for another unforgettable event at one of the country’s most iconic waves.
Events like the Cave Rock Invitational don’t just crown champions—they remind everyone why local bodyboarding continues to thrive.
More Than Just Good Waves
Great winters aren’t remembered only for the surf.
They’re remembered for early alarms, checking the forecast with friends, full car parks before sunrise, photographers lining the beach, and those sessions that become stories you’ll tell for years.
That’s exactly what this winter has delivered.
Every good swell has brought the Durban surf community together, from experienced locals to the next generation discovering just how good our coastline can be.

From the Bluff to North Beach and all the way up to Ballito, it’s honestly world-class.
Great weather, warm water, amazing food, wonderful people and, most importantly, incredible waves. It’s really a great place to visit during winter in South Africa.” 🇿🇦🌊
Hard to argue with that.
This winter has been a reminder of why we do what we do.
The waves have been consistent.
The community has shown up.
The events have delivered.
And Durban has once again proven why it deserves its place on the map as one of South Africa’s great winter surf destinations.
With more swell still forecast and winter not over just yet, we’re looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store.
